iPhone, web app

For a while now i’ve been toying with the idea of creating an iPhone App. After seeing a colleague battle with Objective C making our ReviewSpace Touch application I decided against a native one.
I then switched my attention to Web Apps. I’d had a bit of a dig around making an iPhone optimised site before, but it didn’t really do much. With wanting to learn some of the new features HTML 5 would offer, I decided to create an app that tied into the GeoLocation API now available to the iPhone, via the 3.0 update.
Without planning anything out, I dived right into the HTML5 Geo Location...

o2 our good friend in the UK for iPhone coverage claim to be ‘better connected’. That’s their claim, not mine. Recently I needed to tether my iPhone to my Macbook Air – a simple process you may think. It should have been, but it wasn’t. Hence this blog post. You can read my story, or just cut the crap and read how to do it.
If you’re not familiar with tethering on the iPhone, it basically is a way of using your phone as a modem for your computer so you can get online. This is handy for the times when you’re out and about without Wi-Fi and require an internet...

I have written a wrapper in CodeIgniter for the Prowl PHP API. It allows you to easily send Push Notifications to an iPhone by calling a simple function.
Prowl is a Growl client for the iPhone. Notifications from your Mac or Windows computer (see the FAQ) can be sent to your iPhone over push, with a full range of customization and grace you expect. Prowl also features an extensive API, which allows your scripts to integrate beautifully. The API has a PHP version that allows you to integrate this with your web apps.
There are two functions and they behave slightly differently;
sendPushNotificationSingle($pushEvent,...

This post will show you how to use your iPhone as a wireless speaker so that you can stream your iTunes library (or any application) to your iPhone.
(This will only work within Wi-Fi range of your computer running iTunes)
This set is up uses the following:
MacBook (2008 model)
iPhone 3G 8Gb (Jailbroken)
iTunes
Airfoil
Airfoil speakers touch
Remote app
Backgrounder (via Cydia)
To get this to work you will need to Jailbreak your device, if you are scared of doing so – don’t be. There are plenty of posts around to help you. The reason that you need to Jailbreak is so that you can...

Over the weekend I updated my iTunes library and I now have over 23,482 songs. Due to my iPhone having only 8GB of storage space there was no way that I could have all that music with me all of the time, but with a few apps I don’t need to physically carry my music with me. The iPhone has opened up a host of ways to find, share and play music while on the move. This post is about some of the tools that I use to achieve musical bliss.
Shoutcast
This is a free radio app that features thousands of internet streams. Its works great over wi-fi and 3G and features a good selection of niche stations....

Just a quick post to show you a web service that allows you to create and download ringtones for your iPhone. Simply head to http://audiko.net and follow the instructions.
Here is one I made earlier:

As a web designer/developer having an iPhone helps to make being productive just that bit easier. Here are some of the tools and work-flows I use to achieve this:
Email
Our company currently use Google Apps to provide email and shared calendar solutions. Since the iPhone is pre-configured with G Mail support I get access to my work mail via IMAP on the go. Whether I choose to read this or not is ofcourse another option.
Calendars
I use MobileMe for my personal calendar which is also synced to both my work iMac and home MacBook. As we use Google Apps for our calendars at work, I can view them by...

While creating mock-ups of sites its often useful so see what it will look like in a browser window. For this reason I have created a png of a desktop and mobile safari interface.
I find that this is useful for clients to get a better feel of what a site will look like and also as a designer to scale images and element blocks.
Below is also a simple script that will detect if a user if viewing the site from an iPhone/iPod touch and redirect them to a optimised version. It is always good practice to offer a link to the full desktop experience.
<script language=javascript>

As you can see from the scree shot above, I have created my first iPhone web app. I say web app loosly as it doesn’ty actually do anything apart from tell you about me!!
There is some interactivity however – simply swipe your finger on the screen to move between different frames.
Try it on your iPhone or iPod touch (you need to be running 2.0 or higher).
Go to i.sizzla-media.co.uk
If you’re wondering how it was done – check this out.
As soon as I can be bothered ( and find a need to) I will create a proper working web app that actually does something useful, maybe an optimised...
