This post is for any web site owner who wants to add a search plugin for their site.
If your not too sure what I mean, then take a look in the top right corner of your browser next to the address bar, and you will see another input box. This allows you to search directly from the browser. If your using Firefox your default search in normally Google and for IE user its Live Search. There is a method to add your site so that users can find content without first having to go to your site. (take a look at flCodr.com to see this – simply click on the drop down box arrow and click ‘Add flCodr’).

Do you use Firefox on multiple platforms and machines? Yes? Than this post if for you.
I’ve already written about Foxmarks the great Firefox add-on that allows you to sync your bookmarks between multiple instances on Firefox (even works across platforms – I use it to sync my Mac and XP versions).
There are two add-ons (FEBE and Cleo) that will allow you to backup your Firefox install and then package your add-ons into a single xpi file. This is great if you want to copy your addons between machines.
To prove it works, i’ve packaged my previous post on a set of Web Developer...

So your a budding new web designer, or even a seasoned pro? Whatever your skill level, no master is complete without a good set of tools. Luckily for us there are lots of tools to help us on our way. The first thing to do is arm yourselves with a good web browser. My weapon of choice is Firefox as its simple, easy to use and there are lots of add-ons that are very useful. It is these add-ons that enable me as a web designer to be able to adjust and edit my sites, quickly and easily.
I have included my favourites here.
Firebug
Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools...

Seems that i’m not the only the one that isn’t a fan of the old IE browser. This is the icon for the Mac only CSSEdit.
(By the way look in the bottom left corner)
It made me smile non the less. Oh and IE/Windows fans, don’t bother with any silly comments!!

I’ve written a little script for all you Firefox fans out there that will detect the browser that the user is running. If it is anything apart from Firefox the user will be prompted to download a copy of Firefox. They do ofcourse have the option to carry on using their current browser to view the site.
There is also a version that uses a cookie to bypass the check each time the user tries to view your site.
The script can be modified to let more browsers in. At the moment the script is only written in asp.net (sorry I don’t know PHP) but if there any PHP guys out there that would like...

So I thought that with the release of IE7 some of the bugs would be fixed. Who was I kidding? I recently found some code to create an RSS feed from a database, set it up and got it working. Brilliant I thought. But like every web designer checked to see if it was cross browser compliant. There is a PDF of the screen shots I took of the feed in various browsers and environments to test it here. I don’t think I even need to say that IE failed. Oh and by the way, I checked the feed to see if it had errors and it didn’t so why the hell doesn’t it work. Just for interest this is a...

This is just a link for two great plugins for Growl that notify you when there is a change in either Thunderbird or Firefox.
In Thunderbird, Growl displays a notification when new mail is recieved, and in Firefox displays when downloads are complete (clicking on the notification, opens up the download manager).

Just had a little look on my Google Analytics reports and so far 94% of visitors of this site use either Firefox or Mozilla compliant browsers. Not really that interesting just a big fat two fingers at the IE users out there, that truly believe its the ‘only’ browser. Do yourselves a favour and go grab a copy of Firefox. Read my other posts about great Firefox add-ons that extend the power of the great browser. Enjoy and thanks for visiting!!

Do you connect to various internet connections that require different proxy settings? Are you fed up of having to manually change these proxies all the time?
The Switch Proxy Tool, for Firefox is the answer. It allows you to create profiles for each proxy and quickly and easily change between them. This is a must if you are switching between a Uni and Home connection (TIC!!).
Hope this helps you

Do you use FireFox on more than one machine? If like me you do then this app is great. Its a little add-on that syncs your bookmarks on each instance of FireFox you have installed, whether that be Windows, Mac or whatever!! This should definatly be included as standard for future releases. Keep watching for more of the best FireFox add-ons.
